The Right Start
The first step in evaluating any nutritional program for your horse is understanding how your horse's digestive system works. Horses were designed to be grazing animals, eating small amounts of forage (i.e. grass or hay) throughout the day. They have a relatively small stomach and most of the digestion takes place in the cecum. The cecum is a portion of the large intestine that holds about 22 quarts in a mature horse. The cecum is where fiber from forage is digested by bacteria. A healthy functioning cecum is essential to the health of your horse.
Horses were not designed to eat grain. The soluble carbohydrates in grains turn into glucose faster than their system can handle it. This creates a glucose spike in their system which in turn requires an insulin response. Therefore the more you can get out of a forage diet without grain and still obtain the performance needed, the healthier your horse will be.
The objective then is to get the highest utilization of forage as possible to lower or eliminate the need for feeding grain. AES achieves this objective by using corn steep as a liquid base. Corn steep is essentially the fermented corn juice that is a by product from the processing of corn sweeteners. This liquid is a naturally good source of protein, vitamins and minerals. To this base we add a comprehensive and balanced mineral and vitamin package. This combination helps increase the numbers and activity of cecum bacteria thus increasing fiber conversion and feed utilization. Thus by making the digestion system more efficient your horse is able to draw more nutrients out of their fiber diet and lessen or eliminate the need for grain.
